Autumn 2018

For Autumn 2018, we are trying a new meeting format with workshops during school holidays instead of Sunday morning meetings. These workshops will be held at PUTNEY METHODIST CHURCH, Gwendolen Avenue SW15 6SN (5 mins walk from Putney mainline station and East Putney District Line). The church is on the corner of Gwendolen Avenue and Upper Richmond Road. Free parking in (smallish) church car park.

TUESDAY 23rd OCTOBER 2018 11.00 - 15.00, COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN (CAD)

Putney Methodist Church, Gwendolen Avenue, SW15 6SN.

We will be using SketchUp! to make accurate 3D CAD models of a toy, a house, or any manufactured product you care to imagine. CAD is a design process so we start by sketching a plan using pencil and paper (in the virtual sense of course) to decide how it looks, how it works, what it is made of and how big . The end result will be a computer-generated film or photograph in 3D of the finished product. By the end of the day you will have mastered the basic tool of any architect, construction engineer or product designer. SKETCHUP! is free to download https://www.sketchup.com

Ages 7 - 13. Please bring a laptop (Mac or PC, but not a tablet).

FRIDAY 26th OCTOBER 2018, 10.30-15.30 HALF TERM CREATIVE WRITING AND COMIC ART

Putney Methodist Church, Gwendolen Avenue, SW15 6SN.

10.30 - 12.00 TIGERS AND STORYTELLING The author Richard Dikstra will talk about his work on tiger conservation, how these great beasts have been used in myth and fiction and how he was inspired him to write the Tigeropolis series. This will all be in the framework of what makes a good character and a good story and how to write with a chance to put some of this into practice. R.K. Dikstra's books are charmingly illustrated; the role of drawings in influencing the imagination will also be discussed.

13.00 - 15.30 COMIC ART MASTERCLASS We are very lucky to have Kev F Sutherland who is the genius behind comic strips in the Beano, Dr Who Adventures and Match. He is not only comic artist but also comedian and seems to be capable of getting children in stitches as they are taught how to devise, sketch and complete a comic. The finished product will be produced on the day and every one will go home with their comic as well as everyone else's and a caricature of themselves. Meet him on his website http://comicfestival.co.uk/

£28 including lunch. Ages 7 - 13. £2 discount for PPUK members.

FRIDAY 21st DECEMBER AND SATURDAY 22nd DECEMBER 11AM - 3.00PM
MATHS CHRISTMAS MASTERCLASSES

Putney Methodist Church, Gwendolen Avenue, SW15 6SN.

Two days of immersion in numbers and problem-solving for anyone who finds school maths too restricting. Joe Taylor and fellow students from Cambridge University will introduce as well useful techniques, practical applications and a few important discoveries in the history of maths and some concepts that you would not even recognise as maths. By worked examples, puzzles and solving problems you can be sure that the children will be masters themselves by the end of the day. Paper and pencils provided.

Each day is standalone but covering different material so please come to both! The masterclass is aimed at motivated and bright 9 - 13 year olds, but open also to younger children with an ability to match this. A basic conceptual understanding of algebra will be assumed, that is, the representation of numbers or unknowns by letters, for example 'the sum of numbers from 1 to n = n(n+1)/2 where n is any whole number'. Places are limited. To reserve a place please reply to this email. Payment is on the day by cash or cheque.

£20 per day including lunch. (£2 discount for members of PPUK).
