What are we made of?

What are all these 'tissues' made of?

Cells! Cells are the building blocks of tissues. The exact type of cell differs between the different tissues, but they are all really very similar.

Two of the examples from the previous page are a little special: bone and wood. In these, the normal cells have filled with a hard substance to make them strong. In the bulk of wood, the cells themselves have died, leaving the hard substance which gives the strength.
