Introduction
This is an attempt to turn my talk on Genes and Proteins for
Kingston Explorers into a set of web pages. I've added a few links to
other sites of interest, so I hope that you will find something new
here if you came to the talk as well as getting most of the
information if you missed it. Any questions, ask me at a meeting, or

Here is a list of things you will need to try out all the
experiments:
- An onion
- A (cheap) microscope. When buying a cheap microscope, don't go for
one with a huge magnification (like 1000x) - the quality you will get
will make it virtually useless. A magnification of up to 300x is
fine. Failing a microscope, a good magnifying glass will do.
- A slice of white bread
- A fresh ripe pineapple
- A jelly - make the jelly up and let it set. Choose a flavour you
like so you can eat it later!
- A bag of spinach
- A kitchen blender
- A kitchen timer or a watch
- Some meat tenderizer (available from supermarkets)
- A bottle of washing up liquid (you will need quite a lot)
- A bottle of iso-propyl alcohol. Available from chemists (a small
chemists is more likely to have it than somewhere like Boots)
- A clear glass - fairly tall with straight sides is best
- A teaspoon
