Autumn 2012

Welcome to the Autumn!

Surrey Explorers is open to all children who would like to learn more than school can provide. The aim is to have a group discussion for a couple of hours, usually led by a guest speaker, to stretch and inspire children up to the age of about 13 who would like more than school can provide. Rather than moving too far ahead in school subjects, the intention is to spark new interests, meet people who have achieved some eminence or expertise and stimulate young minds. We encourage you to join the NAGC, but you do not have to book or commit. Design workshops need to be booked £10 per child; for speaker meetings, just turn up and pay £7 per child on the door. All events will be held at Kingston University, Education Faculty, Kingston Hill campus, off Kingston Vale (A308). Sat Nav postcode is KT2 7LB. Please visit our website at www.surreyexplorers.org.uk. During the sessions we have play facilities for younger siblings so you can bring the whole family.

This term we are running two types of events: a series of Explorers Club workshops on 'Design Solutions' for children aged 4-11, and speaker meetings for children aged 8+. Children aged 8+ are welcome to come to both. The Design Solutions workshops offer an introduction to technology and design, from both the science and the art perspective. They will run on 16 September, 7 October, 11 November, and next term on 6 January 2013. Attending all the Design workshops will qualify for a Star Award, the junior version of the Crest Award www.britishscienceassociation.org/web/ccaf/CRESTStarInvestigators/. There is no requirement to commit to all, come to whatever you can! All events are on Sundays, mostly 10.30-12.30 (but see the diary for one exception) and at our usual venue – Kingston University, Kingston Hill. Hope to see you there!

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have ideas for future sessions:
