Spring 2017

Welcome to the Spring term!

Surrey Explorers meet on occasional Sundays 10.30 - 12.30. Primarily directed at 8+, younger children are welcome too. Activities are interactive, intended to inspire new interests and introduce advanced concepts for the curious child who wants to learn more. Where possible we will be running a parallel discussion session for parents to share ideas and experiences.

Don't forget that we are now on Facebook. Come and join us: https://www.facebook.com/SurreyExplorers

Note that we now meet at Kingswood House School, Epsom.

Highfield School Bursary seeking candidates

The Highfield Centenary Bursaries Fund is looking for candidates for entry this September into Years 4 , 6 and 7 at Highfield School and have approached me as it may suit a Surrey Explorer. Highfield is an independent day and boarding school for children aged from 8 to 13 years in Liphook, Hampshire. It is a fantastic opportunity for any child. The Fund has sponsored at least one child through Surrey Explorer who has flourished at the school. The first Centenary scholar went on to Charterhouse last year on a full bursary.

More information about the school may be found at www.highfieldschool.org.uk. There will be an Open Day on 4th February and candidates are asked to apply by early next week. If you are interested please contact susie.schofield@highfieldschool.org.uk, telephone 01428 728042.

The school writes: "We are hoping to find a child who is showing real academic potential and spark, who is really keen to learn but due to their background or financial circumstances are not reaching their full potential. Our close relationships with local independent secondary schools have meant we have a commitment from them to fund the children’s education once they leave Highfield.

The main criteria for candidates are:

  1. Children who are experiencing social difficulties, such as being bullied at school but who have the potential to thrive in the Highfield environment with its strong sense of community and high level of pastoral support.
  2. Those who have challenging home lives due to social or financial problems.
  3. Children with special needs, who have the ability to succeed academically if given the right support.
  4. Gifted children, who are showing real potential.

We meet about five times each term.

Meetings are usually held on Sunday mornings from 10.30am - 12.30pm.

From November 2016, we normally meet at Kingswood House School, 56 West Hill, Epsom, Surrey KT19 8LG.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have ideas for future sessions:
